Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) in Clinical Animal Behaviour
The Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) is available to meet the needs of graduates who wish to broaden and deepen their knowledge in the subject they studied at undergraduate level. This programme at the University of Waikato provides students with an in-depth understanding of animal behaviour, animal welfare, and animal-related ethical and legal matters; an understanding of learning theory, which extends to the application of skills in animal training and behaviour modification of animals; the ability to assess problematic behaviours in animals, identify factors contributing to problem behaviours, and plan behaviour modification programmes; professional skills in client counselling and effective communication; and the ability to design, execute, and interpret original research in this field of study. Career Opportunities: Depending on the qualification completed and individuals' particular interests, graduates of this programme may find employment in a range of animal-related industries and roles, including animal behaviour consulting, advanced animal training, animal-related organisations and authorities, animal behaviour research, animal technician work, zoos, conservation work, and the animal care sector such as animal shelters or boarding kennels and catteries.
Applicants must be graduates of a recognised bachelor’s degree with a B/B+ grade average. Also they must have a major in the relevant subject area with a B/B+ grade average. Applicants for whom English is not their first language must demonstrate their proficiency with any one of the following: TOEFL (paper based) score of 577 overall including a TWE of 5.0; or TOEFL (computer-based) score of 233 including a TWE of 5.0.
